“ Take Miami, bring it to a city rooftop, and you have Chotto Matte in downtown SF. This Japanese-Peruvian marvel is worth all the time, all the food, and all the $$. Just be aware- in true Miami fashion, this place is bumpin' so your important conversations may need to happen another night. Our Saturday night experience was so fantastic, made even better by the staff. Their hospitality, attention to detail, and swiftness was the cherry on top of a great evening. Now to the food and libations! Pisco sours are a must (and a Peruvian staple) or a Yuzu Martini for some Asian flare. You can't go wrong with any of their cocktails. For food, here were the highlights (and I know we didn't have them all): -Spicy edamame- a little pizazz over the edamame you're used to -Nikkei gyoza- pork & shrimp bundles of joy -Wagyu beef and plantain spring rolls- there is a reason why people say wagyu is best and it pushes these spring rolls over the top -Spicy tuna crispy sushi- there is a reason why these are a fan favorite. Great flavor and texture. -Yellowtail "Nikkei Sashimi"- beautiful quality fish that is perfectly balanced with spice. Not too little, not too much. -Black Cod Aji Miso- one of the best pieces of fish I have had in ages. A sizable piece, this dish was magnificent. -Churros- I mean are we really going to say anything bad about fried donuts? I think not. Amazing meal. Cannot wait to go back. ”
“ What a great experience at this upscale restaurant. The decor is to die for and the view really takes it over the top. We were celebrating a friend's birthday and Chotto Matte really made it special. I ordered the tasting menu and there were some a la carte items as well. I thought everything was delicious but I especially loved the mushroom tostadas and the creme brulee. ”
“ Ok I'm Peruvian, so obviously I had to try out this spot. Everything was amazing, granted I've still got more to try but the vibes are immaculate, the DJ that night played ambient music, the food was delicious, and the drinks were the cherry on top. I ordered the asado de tira, the purple potato puree is everything! Sat at the bar, had a wonderful experience with the bartender, Alex. Very personable and attentive to everyone.. I believe I ordered the Kakigori, perfectly made. Overall, great experience! Will be back, for sure! ”
“ my fiancé and i made reservations super easily via OpenTable for the day after valentine's day! we parked at Fifth & Mission Parking Garage and walked about less than 10 minutes. we were seated instantly upon arrival. we liked how they have a variety of options of food from land to sea. we tried the salmon, sushi roll, lychee ceviche, chicken karaage, and a mushroom tostada. everything was so flavorful and served quickly. i honestly was surprised of the combination of salmon and sweet potato yam. the sato maki roll and king mushroom oyster tostada were also favorites of the day. when it comes to cocktails, the kakigori is a must try. the sweetness and fruitiness were a perfect combination that masked the vodka. it had you really wanting for more and actually paired really well with all the dishes we chose. i really liked the softness of the ice - it was really like a slush almost! would definitely come again to try other dishes! i heard there are certain nights where there is also a DJ! the staff was so kind to even surprise us when we chose a dessert - they wrote happy valentine's day even though we were a day late! ”
“ Food here was amazing. I tried the chips & guac as well as the Asado de Tira. The beef was very tender and cooked to perfection. The ambiance of the whole place makes it a great place to visit with friends or even on a date. The service here was also amazing! The bartender named Alex surely knows his cocktails. He made me the best espresso martini I've ever had (and I've had them everywhere)! He was very personable and exuded great customer service skills. He made our first experience there a great one. I will definitely be back! ”
“ My friend and I got food to share. We got the salmon tostada, corn ribs, King Oyster Mushroom Tostada, Sato Maki. It was just enough food I would say. Didn't leave hungry but also wasn't stuffed to discomfort. Service was good. Took some time to be seated. Note: when you enter off the street you need to take the elevator up. ”
“ 1/17/2025 What was once the Macy's Men's store here in San Francisco is now a mixed use modern building. Part residential and commercial with the upper floors leased to Chotto Matte. There was so much fan fare when their opening was first announced and I have been dying to sit in for an experience! Location: while Union Square itself has seen better days, it's a relief that developers are willing to, shall we say look past the grime and embrace change? Part of the change is the going away of Macy's as a whole. As discerning it is to say that what is beloved won't be a fixture in the coming months, at the very least new businesses are willing to give Union Square a second chance. You can find Chotto Matte directly adjacent to Macy's on O'Farrell, intersecting with Stockton street in the former Macy's Men's store. The what: Chotto Matte is a fusion of Latin and Japanese cuisine in a sensual and ultra hip lounge like restaurant. Come here for: beautifully presented food, social media ready drinks that also pack a punch, and for an esthetically pleasing surrounding that will put anyone at ease. My friends and I came here for happy hour after working a long and stressed week. The How: well, reservations are recommended but walk ins are also welcome. Always check their website to see if there are any special events that could impact normal operating hours. On the inside: walk through a mirrored ceiling lit with what looks like a constellation with Chotto Matte's name. Take the elevator to the 8th floor to find the actual restaurant. We are meet with friendly personnel that escorted my party and I to a crescent shaped booth by the bar set against a wall to ceiling glass door that allows access to an outdoor patio. The design of the restaurant is very modern with bold furniture and indoor plants. Color is very much subdued and lighting being quite dim. As the sun starts to set, the vibe of the restaurant feels very relaxed. Food & Beverage: we came actually for a quick bite and a drink or two, and ended up staying longer as happy hour had just begun. The food and cocktails were exceptional. The standouts were the king oyster mushroom tostadas and smoked old fashioned. I am definitely coming back here as everything I've experienced was superb. ”
“ Very unique sushi rolls, I loved the Tiger roll with the corn tempura on top. The crispy tuna was so good but a little expensive for the quanitity. Ambience was amazing - perfect for date night or girls night with low light, rooftop, and cool dj. Took a while to get seated even with a reservation :( ”
“ We have now finished our journey. For those wondering on my rating of this culinary cruise. It is... 12/10. Giovanni is the best server you can get. I have always thought I peaked too soon when it came to experiencing life. I've done so much in sooo little time. Chotto Matte proved me wrong tonight by showing me the best is always yet to come. By far the best restaurant I've ever been to. First time I've ever considered vomiting in order to eat again and first time food has ever made me tear up. Out of this world. ”
